The Dunes 4 x 4 and quadbike experience
The Dunes is a well-run guided 4x4 route for anyone wishing to improve their sand-driving skills.
The best part is that it is basically vehicle-friendly. Of course there have been cowboys who have damaged their vehicles, but that's usually due to irresponsible driving and not listening to the guides.
This is also a great place to hone your sand-driving skills before setting off on a longer trip to Namibia. Not least of all because it's guided, so there is always an experienced sand driver at hand to help out and teach you the tricks of the trade.
If this is your intention, you may want to bring your vehicle along, as it would be kitted out for your long travels, so you get the feel of it fully loaded. The facilities at the campsite haven substantially upgraded sine our last visit and there is a large covered lapa with shade cloth covering the floor. This large are now also boasts big tables, benches and washing-up facilities.
It is protected from the wind and would accommodate a large group easily. Flush toilets, showers and a very efficient donkey boiler complete the picture.
Once again, this is a great place to test out your camping setup before heading off into the wilds. There is a compressor available to re-inflate your tyres after your outing on the sand and Suzie runs a small farm shop and tearoom at the entrance to The Dunes.
Where to stay There is a bush camp with shade as well as protection from the wind. It offers hot and cold running water with showers and a communal lapa and braai area. Alternatively, nearby Lamberts Bay offers all typed of accommodation.
What else Lamberts Bay and the surrounding coast is full of promise, including crayfishing (in season), Bird Island, open-air seafood restaurants and of course the famous flower routes. There is also horse riding, wine routes and surfing.
Specialist packing The summer weather can be harsh, so take your sunscreen, hat and jacket for the wind. You'll also need basic recovery gear including especially a tyre gauge and compressor.
Why go there? Fantastic sand driving without crossing the border and a genuine desert feel provifing fun for the whole family
