Auroraaurora, Sandveld

Aurora, meaning 'daybreak' is set against the slopes of an imposing mountain in the middle of the Sandveld. In summer the area can look dry and colourless in contrast to the lush green mountain, but after the first rains the area is transformed into a paradise of flowers.

An almost forgotten village close to the very famous Verloren Vlei (RAMSAR protected) for the nature lover to explore, Aurora offers fantastic birdwatching, hiking, fauna & flora, San rock art, cycling, 4x4 routes and is only 20 minutes away from the Atlantic Ocean at Dwarskersbos.

This area of the Western Cape is well known for its spring flowers and excellent bird life.

Aurora was first established as a church centre for the people in the area but it broke away from the congregation of Piketberg in 1906. By 1866 building work had started already on a small church on the farm Rietvlei. The present church was completed in 1908 and the first minister was Reverend C R Ferreira, a former Boer prisoner of war in Ceylon. When his daughter was baptised here, he called her Ceylonia Aurora.

French Astronomer, Abbe De la Caille, erected the McClear Beacon on the outskirts of Aurora in 1751. This beacon is the northernmost survey beacon on which the arc of meridian is measured along with two others, at Kasteelberg and the corner of Strand and Adderley Streets in Cape Town respectively, was used to measure the southern arc of the meridian.

Aurora is part of the wheat, fruit and sheepfarming region that lies between the coast and the N7 highway to Namibia. It is a great stepping off place for the coastal region and also for the spring flowering of the area.
