Citrusdalcitrusdal

Arrive in Citrusdal in spring and you will think you have died and gone to heaven! The heavy scent of orange blossom fills the valley and the orange groves look as though they have been dusted with white stars.

The majestic Cederberg mountain range towers over Citrusdal; the hub of the citrus growing industry in South Africa. Only two hours drive from Cape Town, this town seems worlds apart from the frenetic activity that occurs elsewhere

. With its old-world charm and values, Citrusdal is unique in that it is surrounded by mountains; the Koue Bokkeveld, Swartberg and Cederberg mountains form a ring around the town with its far stretching orchards that become a wonder world when the orange trees are heavily laden with ripe oranges.

Driving along the farm roads at this time of year is a surreal experience. No matter where you look, you are surrounded by bright orange that make the orange trees look like they are hung with Christmas decorations. The valley produces high-quality honey, rooibos tea and excellent wines, but the oranges are the real treat. The superior citrus products and Golden Valley wines, made from grapes grown in the valley and on surrounding farms, have contributed to make Citrusdal world renowned.

Hiking, mountain biking, horse-back riding, bird watching and 4X4-trails are but a few of the activities that Citrusdal offers the outdoor enthusiast. Indigenous fynbos and other plant life can also be admired in Citrusdal and surrounding areas.

Oldest citrus tree in South AfricaThe oldest orange tree in South Africa is found on the farm "Heksrivier" in the Citrusdal valley. It is older than 160 years, still bears loads of fruit and has been declared a national monument. You can also visit the museum a charming old stone building with eExhibitions depicting early pioneer days and Khoisan heritage.

Tourists should visit the Golden Valley Wine Cellar which can be described as the heartthrob of Citrusdal, and which has wine tasting facilities where visitors are welcome. The local museum is situated in the original church building of Citrusdal. The N7 between Citrusdal and Clanwilliam is a beautiful, scenic drive, with citrus orchards hugging the road and farm stalls with fruits and home made items at regular intervals.

Citrusdal has a small museum, which mainly focuses on the history of the town, the first pioneers and the local Khoisan. Next to the museum stands the historical Sandveldhuisie which houses a coffeeshop and an arts & crafts centre.
