Port Owen port owen

Sharing the mouth of the Berg River with Velddrif and Laaiplek, Port Owen, a sailor's ultimate utopia, is an inland marina - one of the best man-made Marinas in the countryand.

The marina is surrounded on three sides by the Great Berg River and is one kilometre from the harbour mouth where the river meets St. Helena Bay. This bay offers the finest sailing conditions on the South African coast line due to its sheltered nature and orientation to the prevailing summers wind.

Port owen on SA-West CoastPort Owen offers anchorage for yachts and larger motorised boats as well as accommodation in upmarket housing where you can moor your boat in front of your home.

Boats have easy access to the sea and the fishing grounds of St Helena bay. For those less fortunate there is plenty of place for small dinghies on the river where fishing is good. The canals are over 3 km. long with a breadth ranging between 30 and 60 meters. Mooring facilities are always available.

In early Spring the west coast is at its most beautiful. The dry fields along the R27 and the Berg River transform themselves into carpets of colour as the wild flowers explode into bloom. With so much more to offer visitors these days than a hundred years ago the west coast is becoming a very popular destination. Locals from all over South Africa are streaming to the area to purchase beachfront properties along the pristine Atlantic coastline.

In the past fresh water was a problem but these days it is pumped out of the Berg River to supply the burgeoning new developments along the coastline. Overseas visitors arrive in their droves to see the wild flowers in Spring and to enjoy the seafood restaurants found in most towns along the west coast.
