redelinghuys Better known as the "Potato Capital" of the West Coast Sandveld region, Redelinghuys has a true magical beauty of its own and features one of the largest natural wetlands on the West Coast. The Verlorenvlei is a bird lover's haven, attracting a wide variety of permanent and migratory birds. The Verlorenvlei can be explored on foot, or one can spend a day paddling on its calm waters.
An almost forgotten yet charming village, Redelinghuys lies along the road between Elandsbaai and Piketberg, the town is a scenic village renowned for its unique flora and fauna, water and exceptional birdlife and potato farms as well as beautiful surroundings.
Verlorenvlei supports over 189 bird species, of which 75 are waterbirds. The wetland regularly supports over 5,000 birds and occasionally it holds over 20,000, including more than 1,000 waders of at least 11 different species. Most importantly, the area is a moulting ground and summer refuge for ducks.
Hiking, fauna & flora, San rock art, cycling, 4x4 routes are all on offer and Redelinghuys is only 20 minutes away from the Atlantic Ocean at Eland's Bay.
The West Coast and Klein Karoo are semi-arid regions and are typified by many species of succulents and drought-resistant shrubs and acacia trees.
The soil in this area has always produced excellent vegetables and in the past the fishermen would barter and exchange their catch for the vegetables grown here. Verlorenvlei was a favourite haunt of Lady Anne Barnard. She would frequently visit the Klaar-fontein homestead that resided on the shore of the Vlei. Unfortunately the ruins of this home are all that remain today.
