Marie Theron, West Coast Artist

MARIE THERON, West Coast Artist

Marie’s career  spans several decades as teacher, lecturer, illustrator and artist.

It was while she was still producing vibrant still life paintings and depictions of pensive women  for a solo exhibition in Budapest, that she received a request to include some South African landscapes with her work. “I happily launched into several idealized West Coast-type scenes, of which the SA Embassy in Budapest bought two. I also sold  some of those landscapes  in the USA, Canada and Ireland, but was not happy about the fact that I was producing ‘formula’ landscape work”,  reflected Marie.

She re-imagined her role as a West Coast landscape artist. Today, only original, one-off paintings depicting the REAL West Coast will leave her studio which is situated in a nature reserve 80 meters from the sea and 60 kilometers north of Cape Town.

She spends her time travelling, sketching and discovering quaint places and interesting stories about this unique area which is also an important part of the floral biosphere. She completes at least one painting per week and places it on her blog with some architectural or other information.

The blog is very successful, with followers on several networks and scored 4 000 hits in 5 months. (Counting started 10th June 2009). Almost all the comments that she received mentioned that her works  portrays the West Coast, its people, architecture and natural beauty with a fond familiarity that makes people from all over the world feel an urge to visit this Area.

Marie has taught both art and art history, illustrated books, designed stationery and held exhibitions both locally and overseas, with several works in important collections.

Blogging the West Coast and introducing the region to many people from over the world is her current passion.

No artist has documented the West Coast in this way before. The paintings show the intimate details of the region and many old buildings are recorded for historical purposes. The paintings are matt finished and suitably framed. Available to the South African market at R1000 - R3000 plus packaging and postage. Your favourite image may still be available

The various forms which are available to the artist: the elusive dynamics of exaggeration, balance, colour and design guide the characteristics of her style.

Of all these, colour rules supreme in her work and she is influenced by everyday images that radiate bold colours: for examplepumpkins, apples, pomegranates and brightly painted fishermen’s' boats.

Marie's mission is to create ‘happy’ and peaceful works to share with and influence the mood of the spectator. You may view her gorgeous paintings in our gallery, along with other artists, or click here
