"I work mostly in oils, and love sculpting. My trademark is variety. I paint subjects ranging from realistic landscapes, still lives, seascapes and portraits to dreamscapes and imaginary scenes. Portraits are done in oils, pastels, pencil or charcoal, from life or from photographs; wildlife from photographs in conjunction with fellow-artist and photographer Jackie During. Sculpture includes ceramics, papier maché and relief works comprising ceramics, found materials, plastic, hardware and natural materials. Some paintings are done from reference material, others just happen. The latter are never consciously conceived. Some works of art just announce themselves; they have a life of their own and even choose their own frames. This process makes art an adventure for me. I also enjoy the exacting task of book illustration, which I do on a free-lance basis, as well as translation, editing and proof-reading in English and Afrikaans (eg. legislation, educational comic strips, children’s books). I grew up in the Tzitzikamma, on the Garden Route in the Southern Cape. I used to work in journalism, translation and public relations. Formerly from Port Elizabeth, Graaff-Reinet, Pretoria, Humansdorp, Outdshoorn, Stutterheim, Bloemfontein, Jeffreys Bay, Britannia Bay, Stellenbosch and Piketberg, I now work from home in Velddrif on the West Coast as an artist, art teacher and free-lance language practitioner. I did a weekly newspaper’s cartoon for a year and have illustrated six children’s books."
