Berg River Valley

The Berg River area forms the northern most part of the route and stretches from the banks of the mighty Berg River to the towering mountain peaks of Piketberg and Porterville in the east. The wines cultivated from the grapes grown in this area reflect the vast terroir and climatic differences characteristic of this area.

The Paardeberg and Malmesbury

The PaardebergThe Paardeberg Wine RouteThe Paardeberg Wines

The Paardeberg (Horse Mountains) is the landmark division between the Swartland and Paarl wine regions. The diverse soil composition and climate of this area has been instrumental in creating exceptional wines. From off-the-beaten track farms to large, modern cellars, this area promises a delightful wine experience.

Malmesbury forms the centre of the route and is also home to the Swartland Santam Wine Route offices. Although predominantly known for its wheat production, top wines are being produced by members such as Swartland Cellars, Abbots Hill, Franki’s Vineyard, while the Wine Fly offers a perfect pitstop.

Abbotts Hill WineryAbbotts Hill Winery
Hillcrest Farm is the home of Abbotts Hill Wines.

Our wines are made from a 10ha vineyard planted with shiraz, cabernet sauvignon and mourvedre dryland bush vines. The combination of natural gravel slopes and extreme weather conditions produce berries with intense, concentrated flavours that make for characterful, interesting wines.

Lammershoek WineryLammershoek Winery

Legend has it that the name Lammershoek, "lambs' corner", originated from the fact that ewes with their young lambs sought shelter in the forests surrounding the farm when threatened by the Black Eagle, in Cape Dutch called the Lammervanger.

The vineyards of Lammershoek lie on the back slope of the Paardeberg, some 50km northeast of Table Mountain (Cape Town), on the border of the Paarl and Swartland region in the heart of the winelands. This area is increasingly gaining popularity with local and overseas wine experts.

The Riebeek Valley

The Riebeek Valley The Riebeek Valley wine estatesChurch in Riebeek Valley

The picturesque Riebeek Valley hosts some of the oldest estates on the route.
Nestled against the Kasteelberg (Castle Mountains), the charming villages of Riebeek West and Riebeek Kasteel promise to entice visitors with its wineries, museums, arts and crafts and fabulous eateries. The area is also well-known for its prolific olive production and most of the wineries offer a wide range of olive products for tasting.

Allesverloren EstateAllesverloren Estate

Where wheatfields extend to the heavy mass of the Kasteelberg, approximately 100 kilometres northeast from Cape Town, lies the Allesverloren Estate - renowned for its distinctive red wines.
It is the oldest wine estate in the Swartland Wine of Origin District.
The history of the estate dates back to between 1696 and 1704 , when the governer of the Cape left it to a certain widow named Cloete. This courageous woman was one of the first settlers who ventured into the inhospitable Swartland region. The early settlers were simple people, with only the most limited agricultural equipment and basic necessities to support themselves. In order to purchase tools or attend church, they had to undertake a long and arduous wagon journey along primitive roads to Stellenbosch. It was on their return from one such journey in 1704 that the settlers found their house burnt to the ground and the farm destroyed. Hence the estate’s sad name, “Allesverloren “ , which means “ all is lost “ .

Meerhof Wine CellarMeerhof Wine Cellar

MEERHOF . . the very name conjures up images of endless rows of ripe vines being caressed by the unrelenting sun of this beautiful Riebeek Valley area.
Located upon the original route taken all those years ago by Pieter van Meerhof, and aptly named after him, these very fine wines are now world known and well loved. Just like this extraordinary explorer discovered this very fine fertile valley, so has Meerhof discovered - through excellent climate, excellent soil and excellent knowledge - their range of world class wines.

Today “Meerhof” is a company owned by Cobus Kotze and the Kotze family trust. lt was bought in 1961 as mainly a wheat and sheep farm. Up until 2000, the few grapes that they did grow were delivered to Riebeek Cellars, but then Cobus decided to realise his dream and turn the estate into a wine farm, producing its own range of wines.

Pulpit Rock WineryPulpit Rock Winery

The Brink family has been farming on the two farms De Gift and Panorama, near Riebeek West, for more than five decades. In the year 2003 they decided to build their very own winery on the foothills of the beautiful Kasteelberg. The winery was aptly named Pulpit Rock – referring to a rock formation resembling a pulpit on the slopes of the mountain.

The first vintage was produced in 2004 and the stylish wine tasting center of Pulpit Rock Winery opened its doors to the public in October 2004.

Riebeek CellarsRiebeek Cellars

With early morning mists dissipating against its craggy upper slopes, the Kasteelberg forms a magnificent profile to the Riebeek Valley and serves as the focal point for Riebeek Cellars, which resides at the foot of this mountain. The cellar, just 45 minutes north west of Cape Town, was established in 1941 but many of its members are descendants of long-established Huguenot winemaking families, who have been involved in this industry for centuries.

The twin villages of Riebeek Kasteel and Riebeek West have in recent years become a centre of attraction as both a wine tourism destination and artist's paradise.
